Overview

Mesquite Chop House, located in the historic heart of downtown Memphis at 88 Union Ave, is a steakhouse that delivers a classic dining experience rooted in robust, mesquite-grilled flavors. The venue itself carries the charm of an older establishment, though it shows signs of wear that suggest it could benefit from some modern touches to truly elevate the ambiance. It’s a place where authenticity meets tradition, and the culinary execution reflects that balance well.

The menu is rich with standout offerings that appeal to steak lovers and those seeking an elevated dining adventure. From the tender, melt-in-your-mouth Filet Mignon to the robust 20-ounce Ribeye, the prime cuts here are grilled over mesquite wood, imparting a signature smoky depth. Seafood options like the Crab Cakes and Grilled Shrimp with Bacon introduce an indulgent surf-and-turf contrast, while the Lobster Mac and Cheese provides a creamy, comforting side that complements the main dishes perfectly. The Mesquite Grilled Caesar Salad and the Mesquite Grilled Duck Breast add variety and showcase the kitchen’s skill in elevating familiar dishes with a smoky twist.

The cocktail selection enhances the experience with well-crafted drinks that balance creativity and classic appeal. Signature cocktails such as the Lemon Drop Martini and Coconut Pineapple Martini bring refreshing, vibrant flavors, while the House Old Fashioned offers a sophisticated finish, embodying the spirit of the place. Bartenders like James receive accolades for their service, ensuring that drinks not only taste impeccable but also contribute to the welcoming atmosphere.

The space itself is cozy and suitable for intimate dinners or business meetings, as noted by patrons who appreciate the clean, well-lit environment paired with light 90s indie pop—music that, while subjective, aligns with the venue's relaxed yet refined tone. Parking remains a mild inconvenience, with no valet services available, but this is a minor drawback in an otherwise solid location within the downtown scene.

Mesquite Chop House appeals primarily to diners seeking a dependable, high-quality steakhouse experience with a touch of Southern charm. It’s ideal for steak aficionados, professionals hosting dinners, and anyone eager to indulge in well-prepared, smoky grilled dishes paired thoughtfully with premium cocktails. With a few contemporary updates to its décor and a broader music selection, this gem has the potential to transform from a solid local favorite into a top-tier dining destination in Memphis.

Albeit aesthetically dated, still tons of potential to be had. I’ll begin by saying the food was great. The taste was in line with what would be expected from a 4 star restaurant, but from there, it left much to be desired. There wasn’t really anything wrong, buuuutttt: the location was fine, but in order to dine there you needed to get really lucky or pay for parking across the street in the garage. Not the end of the world, and if you’re going for the impression route, then it’s fine. No valet offered, so it’s a do it yourself deal, so if they’re a 10 and you’re aiming to impress, save this place for later. The building itself has some character as it’s older, set in the historical portion of downtown Memphis, but the interior is in need of a major facelift to bring it more up to date with a new look and feel that would really wow customers. Bringing in some new art, a change of music piped in (today was 90s pop ), and a slight feel of industrial posh would really set this place apart. I’d still go again, but some touch ups and more variety would go a long way.

Small and intimate but still well lit enough for a business dinner. They have light music playing 90s indi pop which was nice. Staff are well put together. Bathrooms are always a reflection of an establishments cleanliness and this steakhouse had a clean bathroom. The drinks were top shelf amd well priced. The drinks were made perfectly and very yummy.

One of, if not, the best steakhouse in Memphis. The staff is amazing , the general manager is very accommodating , the bartenders are very personal, and the cooks make a point to ask you if your steak and side items are cooked to your liking. I will return probably before the weekend. All you need to do is look at my pictures to understand the food quality.
